This building is a double-sided sports pavilion, with balconies for viewing the tennis courts on either side, changing rooms downstairs and a multi-purpose venue room upstairs. It is located in Brisbane, which has a sub-tropical climate, prone to severe storms.
It has been built in a swale alongside the tennis courts, making good use of land that is not appropriate for residential development because it is subject to inundation.
With this in mind, it is clear from the design that the building does not sit on the slab, but has been elevated so that water can run underneath, cleverly disguised by the lower level timber steps, which are clearly expendable if the water rises even further, and by having the changing rooms on the ground floor, if water rises to this level, the damage is not as great if it were the multi-purpose venue space.
Further resilient design includes oversize gutters and downpipes to cope with increased stormwater flows and extended eaves to protect spectators from sun in the middle of the day.
